Ridley Scott, have I said enough? The man directed Alien and Gladiator, he knows a thing or two about making a movie. And Blade Runner would lean closest to the Alien side. Futuristic as it may be, Blade Runner is an allegory about mankind. It points out the things we do wrong how what is going to happen, a modern day 1984. Harrison Ford is Rick Deckard, a blade runner, it is his job to hunt down and “retire” all radical replicants. A replicant is a clone almost identical to a human being, except its stronger in everyway except it only has a 4 year lifespan. Roy Batty, played by Rutger Hauer, is the leader of a gang of replicants who don’t want to die, who want to live. They want to be just like people, except their persuasive measures are a big violent and they don’t know how to handle their emotions, because they have none. Blade Runner is a sci-fi movie just as Dune is that is a reflection of our society, not just a movie about cool spaceships and aliens. It’s a story about human nature, love, death and prejudice just as an regular movie is about. Blade Runner is a phenominal movie and I suggest you see it, even if you have no incling to, it’s just a movie you have to see one time or another.

On a personal note, I adore this movie I think that the writer Darren Aronofsky is a superbly talented writer and the performences by Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz were just as astounding. The Fountain is a hard to follow love story that places two lovers together in 3 different time periods, the past, the present and the future. Hugh Jackman is Thomas, a conquistador, scientist, and a man who is deeply inlove with his Izzi (and Isabella). But theres a snag, she has a tumor that will eventually kill her. Can love break death? Can love survive through death? Thomas is going to find out.

I’ll start my movie reviews with the most recent film I have watched, The Machinist. First of all, if you don’t like movies where you have to think, you won’t like this movie. It is very avante-garde and does a lot of strange things. Christian Bale plays Trevor Reznik, a machinist, who seems sickly thin and who frequents a hooker named Stevie(Jennifer Jason Leigh). He often finds himself in a cafe’ at the airport being waited on by a spanish woman named Marie(Aitana Sanchez-Goijon). Soon enough you find out things aren’t going as reality should dictate them and you will be on a journey of abnormal mind. Reznik hasn’t slept in over a year, and his weight is going down consistantly. He lives alone in an antiseptic house and is always washing his hands. This movie is about a journey, a journey of a man riddled with guilt, in fact it makes him so sick his withering away. He is being tricked by his own mind into seeing and interacting with people and things that don’t even exist. The Machinist is a movie for those people who dont like a linear movie, people who like to watch a movie and raise theyre eyebrows at things. It is filled with imagery and very subtle things that all add up in a very surprising and for me at least unexpected climax that led me to appreciate the movie and every loose end tied together. I strongly recommend this movie to the crowd that likes movies that are a little on the strange side and like to be taken on nightmarish escapades. To the other people, those who don’t like movies that are quite so strange, this movie might be boring or even just a mind boggler for you, but if its a rainy day and your incredibly bored, I wouldn’t count the Machinist out.
